Description
In 1898 it was noted that a golf club would be started the following year, following the construction of a railway and associated buildings. The railway never reached Whitesands Bay, stopping at Letterston, but the golf course was proceeded with nonetheless, and the golf club is known to have been established by 1903. Members were conveyed there three times a week by mail cart or bus. In the 1930s a clubhouse consisting of a timber chalet was erected. In 1938 it was planned to excavate the course for sand to build St Davids Airfield, and to relocate to 38 acres of neighbouring land. A lease and the position of the clubhouse site were agreed. However, in 1939 the landlord was required to hand the golf course to the authorities so that sand could be provided for the building of an armourments depot at Trecwm, near Fishguard. The intended move never came to fruition, although the sand was removed, resulting in the surface of the course being destroyed. After the war it was described as being in complete ruin, with weeds, brambles and huge boulders covering is surface. The surface was eventually reinstated as the present nine-hole golf course. The course continued to be extended and improved over the following decades, with an extra 17 acres added to the lease in the 1970s, making a total of 50 acres. In 1969 the former Haverfordwest club house was procured as a new club house, and the timber chalet became the green shed. The chalet was demolished in 1988 to make room for a shower, toilet and ladies? changing block.
