Description
A curious site, roughly rectangular in plan with rounded corners. Basically it is a large enclosure 'defended' on three sides by a double bank and double ditch. The fourth side is now a road. The greater part of the enclosed area is ground sloping at an angle of about 20 degrees, only the very top being at all level. The bottom of the enclosure ie that bounded by the present road, has the remains of a structure, a quarry and a spring. Just within the enclosed area at the SW corner and beside the road is the elaborately built spring "Ffynnon Eidda" (NPRN 409412). Beside it is a quarry, and at the SE corner, also beside the road, an 'L' shaped stretch of wall, the remains of the farm "Ty Newydd y Mynydd". Purpose of the enclosure is not clear, possibly a staging post on the drove road (which passes the site), and an enclosure for animals. It is also obviously associated with the destroyed farm and also possibly the spring. Dimensions: overall ca 100m x 90m., width of banks: inner 2.5m., outer 1.6m., height ca 0.3m. Elevation: 480m above O.D.
