Description
Maenofferen Power Station was built in 1911 to generate electricity as direct current to Maenofferen Slate Quarry (NPRN 400427). Water to drive the turbine came from Llyn Bowydd and Llyn New, via a concrete tank (NPRN 65757) and iron pipe (NPRN 65721). The slate-rubblestone building has a slate roof, a yellow brick chimney, and a loading bay on the east side where the delivery pipe enters the building. Inside are a turbine by Gilkes of Kendal dated 1927, and a DC generator and switchgear by British-Thompson-Houston. The power station has been refurbished in recent years and is still generating power for Llechwedd Slate Quarry.
