Description
The Wynne slate mine is located on the immediate east side of Glyn Ceiriog, on the north side of Quarry Road. It was originally a hillside working dating from about 1770 and was further developed in the 1870s with underground workings developed in about 1890. The original mill buildings were formed in a compact area with an incline down to the Glyn Valley Tramroad. An adit and mill were later built at a lower level. In 1898 the quarry employed 64 men, output peaking at 2000 tons with 70 men employed. The quarry/mine closed in 1920. It was later used for military storage and in the 1970s was opened for public display.
The site and some chambers were open to the public in 1991, with others accessible by special arrangement. On the upper site several buildings, including a drumhouse, survived well with several in re-use. The lower site is now a carpark and the adit sealed.
