Description
Located on the sloping west end of a spur aligned south-west by north-east, to the west of Bwlchystyllen ruined farmhouse, is a cluster of boulders in a slight hollow. The hollow measures 5m (E-W) by 3.2. Within it the largest boulder measures 3m by 1.5m and about 0.75m thick, around which lie six smaller boulders close to it. The large boulder has been interpreted as a capstone surrounded by fallen uprights. But its appearance and location suggest a shattered outcrop exposure and attempts to quarry it. Other exposures lie further upslope. Ruined buildings and enclosure boundaries lie close to this feature which would be a likely source of building material. There are no traces of a residual mound around the boulders.
Initially noted by O.T. Jones and listed in an appendix to H.J.Fleur, `Archaeological problems of the west coast of Britain?, in Arch.Camb. 70 (1915), p.418. Re-discovered by Anthony Griffiths.
