Former coal mine already disused by 1880, the date of the first edition Ordnance Survey 25-inch mapping, where it is annotated 'Old Shaft (Coal)'. On subsequent editions the site is annotated 'Carno Pit (Disused)' and now only landscaped earthworks remain.
