Description
The target area of the southern of two rifle ranges at Machynys (NPRN 413307).
The First Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1879 shows a target (probably moveable) at SN51699740. This was replaced with a more substantial earthwork structure in the 1890s a short distance to the west at SN51639738. This was rebuilt on the same site before 1915-16 and is largely the structure visible today, though possible refurbished at some later date. Dense overgrowth of trees and thorns on and around the site prevented close investigation but essentially the target area comprises two parallel linear mounds revetted with concrete walls on their east sides. They are separted by a 7m wide gap along which the targets would have been mounted. The west bank (target mound) is about 2.1m high. Slots along the wall may have supported an awning as shelter for the markers. The east mound (stop butt) is 3m-4m high, now some 25m-30m long (N-S) and is butressed at its north and south ends. A small building immediately behind the wall, shown on maps, could not be seen due to dense overgrowth.
