Description
A mantelet, or marker's shelter, associated with the Machynys rifle ranges (NPRN 413307) is portrayed on the Ordnance Survey First Edition map (1879). At the given location is an oval earthwork scoop cut into rising ground to a depth of 0.9m. It measures overall 4.5m (N-S) by 3.5m, the floor area 2m across. However, there is no evidence of embanking or of a wall or screen as suggested by the map portrayal. This mantalet served the northernmost target area (420182). The site of another mantelet near the neighbouring target to the south could not be accessed due to dense overgrowth of gorse and thorns.
By 1900 the range had developed substantially and mantelets are no longer portrayed on maps.
