Description
St John's church is located about half a kilometre north-east of the village of Llangwm. A small church with medieval origins, it was rebuilt in Perpendicular style to designs of architect John Pritchard in 1849-51. The church is constructed of purple rubble stone with dressings in pale stone and purple sandstone, and imitation stone tiles to roof. It comprises nave and chancel in one (with inserted chancel arch like its predecessor), bellcote on ridge between nave and chancel, and west gable porch, the latter probably retained form the old building.
The interior walling is hammerdressed with tooled red sandstone surrounds to openings and cambered rear arches. The nave and chancel are divided by a continuously moulded pointed chancel arch in pale stone. The stone and concrete curved pulpit was designed and made by W.G. Stephens, churchwarden, in 1965. The font is High Victorian, heavy octagonal ashlar with deep bowl, moulded beneath, squat shaft and moulded base.
