Description
Small quarry cut into sheer cliff between Bosco's Den and Crow's Hole. A roughly rectangular area surrounded by three sheer sides and open to the sea to the south. The vertical drop to the water suggests that small boats could be tied up safely. The quarry is at most 9m wide and 6m deep with a large overgrown mound of fist sized pieces of limestone at the upper end of the sloping floor. Several holes have been drilled into the base of the quarry near the southern end; one contains a protruding iron bar.
Limestone from the quarry was probably exported to Devon where it was burnt in kilns to provide lime for agricultural use. This trade reached its peak in the 19th century and the quarry probably dates to this period. Shown as Quarry on earlier 25 inch OS maps.
