Description
North Pond on Skomer Island, currently pear-shaped measuring 90m x 70m, and artificially dammed at its eastern end. The area occupied by the pond is generally clear of later prehistoric field boundaries and settlements and it may be that this area was formerly larger, or has always been a boggy area prone to waterlogging. It may have been cut for peat in prehistory and early history. Fieldwork for the Skomer Island Project in April 2012 ascertained that reasonable peat deposits surround around the lake fringes. Currently it is managed for the benefit of the island's bird life, and is known to have been mechanically cleared out in the 1960s.
