Description
Mid Cl9 lodge to Plas Machynlleth; shown on lst edition OS map as North Lodge. Single storey and attic; coursed rubble, slate roofs, one blue brick stack and one rendered brick stack. L-shaped main roof at 2-window front; gable to left has cusped bargeboards and pendant (finial broken) with 3-light casement windows, small pane to upper floor. Similar attic window to right in flat roof slate hung dormer; roof dog-legged below over later entrance extension; modern rendering to base. The front has door with sunburst glazing beside 3-light window with leaded panes; similar 2-light window around the corner. Gothic attic window to the NE gable with similar bargeboard detail (also continues down over the lean-to); 2-light window with Tudor label to ground floor; 2-light windows also to longer SW side and to NW (rear) with similar detail to the gable which retains finial; tall stack at rear.

Passing through the Y Plas gates on Heol Maengwyn and along the former drive lined with mature trees, the lodge is on the right hand side. Y Plas was formerly known as Greenfields and one of two substantial houses about 100m apart, both probably dating to the 1700s. The other was known as Lledfair Hall. At the end of the 18th century, Greenfields was owned by John Edwards, a solicitor at Machynlleth, who died in 1789. One of his wives, Cornelia Owen, brought the Garth estate at Llanidloes and the Van lead mines into the family's ownership as her dowry. The estate passed to his son, also called John, who managed to acquire Lledfair Hall. He demolished the rival mansion to enhance the surroundings of Greenfields, built two lodges, West and North Lodge, in 1840.
