Description
St Afan's church is located above the north side of the A483 between Cilmery and Garth, set back from the road in a roundish churchyard used as a cemetery. Although the enclosure shape suggests an early foundation the present church is of nineteenth-century date. It was built in 1867-8 to designs of Charles Buckridge.
It is constructed of squared rubble under slate roofs with ceramic ridge tiles. The church comprises nave and chancel under a single roof, a stepped buttress marking the division between the two, west single bell-cote, gabled south-west porch and gabled north-east vestry. The church is lit through trefoiled lancets. Interior features include the arch-braced roof, and a font of fourteenth or fifteenth-century date - octagonal with raised stops to the base.
