Description
Area of beech trees alongside River Teifi bearing a series of carvings on their bark, also known as arboroglyphs. These may be of historic interest as the date '1941' can be seen on one tree, while another bears graffiti in an old-fashioned Times Roman typeface. There is the possibility that personnel stationed at the nearby Henllan PoW camp (NPRN 419278) may have left military carvings, but the camp was not built until 1942-3. Roger Thomas (Historic England) states that this area of Cardiganshire had a large number of troops billeted in the woollen mills at Felindre/Drefach from early 1940, and possibly at Pont Allt-y-Cafan near Pentrecwrt, al of whom could have been responsible for the early carvings here.
