The parish of St Philip Evans was established in 1975 to serve the growing housing estates of Llanederyn and Pentwyn. Mass was celebrated in the school until the church was opened in 1985. The foundation stone for the church was blessed by Pope John Paul II during his visit to Cardiff in June 1982.
