Grug is a fascinating example of a cottage-farmhouse of the type that rarely survived into the C20th. Grug was not rebuilt in the C19th and survived into the C20th converted into a farmbuilding. The range is stone-built of coursed rubble with house and cowhouse in range. The chimney has been removed and the range has been protected by a roof of corrugated iron. There does not appear to be as straight joint. . In its last phase the house part was a single chamber open to roof
There seem to be three phases.
I. Medieval. Although there is no surviving medieval fabric, the downslope siting of the range with platformed lower end strongly suggests that the range is of medieval origin.
II. C17th. Storeyed vernacular house of late C17th/early C18th. The house was originally built as a storeyed house but with an exceptionally low ceiling. The plan is puzzling. In its last phase the house was a single chamber open to the roof and separated from the cowhouse by a stone partition. Houses generally had a two-unit plan form and the stone partition appears to be an insertion (trapping [laster on the [] side). The original position of the doorway is more likely to be in the present cowhouse range. The present doorway is an insertion as is the stone partition wall between house and cowhouse. The rear of the fireplace beam has a series of marking which may be of significance. Dating always depends on surviving detail. The clearest detail at Grug is the ogee-stopped arched fireplace beam on the first floor. The kitchen fireplace has a broad but rough chamfer. The marks on the back is
III. C19th. In a C19th phase the house was radically altered. The spine-beam was removed and a single room open to the roof created. The stone partition seems to have been introduced at this time. Although it is bonded well on [] side it trapped plaster on the [] side. A new doorway created on the [] side/There was access to the loft over the cowhouse.A cowhouse with lateral tethering created.
A careful survey of the house is needed.
