Description
Bayton House is depicted on the 1st Edition OS map of 1881. It was built c. 1860 by Alexander Bassett, senior partner in Messrs Basset, Basset and Lee civil and mining engineers, engineer for the Cowbridge Railway Company, constructor of Alexandra Dock and County Surveyor for Glamorganshire. Alexander Bassett was resident until 1886 (after which he resided in Bournemouth as treatment for bonchial conditions). By 1889, Mr John Robert & Mrs Margaret Christie are recorded as the occupiers: Mr Christie died in 1906 but his widow is at the house as late as 1909 .

It was bought by the BBC Wales in the early 1960's, together with its extensive grounds, for the construction of the BBC Wales Broadcasting House. The house continued to be used by the BBC until 1975, when it was demolshed to make way for the new E Block extension. Prominent parts of the planted landscape (some of the larger trees) survive.
