Description
Newspaper reports in 1872 refer to a 1500 yard rifle range at Leckwith. By 1880, the first-edition Ordnance Survey 25-inch map shows a range of only 350 yards length. It was aligned north-north-east by south-south-west, firing psoitions shown as points at 50 yard intervals from 100 yards.
By 1901 (second edition map) a 700 yard range is shown on a slightly different alignment (NNW-SSE). This appears to have been more developed. Firing positions are shown as rectangular trenches at 100 yard intervals from 200 yards, sometimes twinned, and a structured target area on the south-east. However, the range had already gone out of use as it is annotated `Old Rifle Range?. By the fourth edition (1940s) the range is still portrayed but with its furthermost shooting positions removed due to building and re-development.
The range lay within the Cardiff Race Course circuit, and near the site of a Roman villa (NPRN 301355). Both range and race course have been removed by the development of local schools, recreation grounds and Trelai Park.
Note: the 1500 yard range at Leckwith may be a reference to the nearby Leckwith Moors range (NPRN 422136).
