Description
A rifle range on the east side of the Taf valley above Taffs Well is portrayed on the first-edition Ordnance Survey 25-inch map of 1875. It consisted of a single firing line of 500 yards aligned north by south. Shooting positions are shown as spots at 50 yard intervals, the target area on the north.
On the second-edition map of 1901 the range has gone though the Cardif Times reported in 1904 complaints received by Caerphilly District Council that '... shooting practices on the mountain endangered the lives of the people' (04.06.1904).
The area has now been developed mostly as a cemetery with mortuary chapel. However, the target area with what appears to be a mantelet (shelter) appears to lie in rough pasture/scrub woodland and may have at least partially survived.
