The school campus at Croesyceiliog was designed to consist of a secondary school, two single-sex gammar schools and a technical school. However, only a co-ed grammar and the secondary modern were finally built, later combined to form Croesyceiliog Comprehensive in 1971.
The site was chosen because of its isolation from both railways and industry, and accessibility from several neighbourhoods, while the buildings were designed by County Architect Colin Jones and assistant County Architect T E Moore. The secondary school opened in 1957 and was designed to provide accommodation for adult education classes at evenings and weekends. The grammar school soon excelled itself; on opening in 1959 it was described as one of the best-equipped grammar schools built by any authority in England and Wales since the war and it gained an equally good reputation for its teaching.
