Description
The sheepfolds are about 880m north of Cwm Cilio farm, some nine and a half miles north west of Porthmadog. They appear on the first edition of the OS 6 inch maps, published in 1891. Gwynedd Archaeological Trust visited the site in 1995, and recorded it as a possible farmstead: 'marked as a sheepfold on the 1:10,000 map, this complex consists of three joined compartments, the central one contains an entrance, sheepcreep and possible chimney. Two smaller annexes are present to the SE and to the SW there is an artificial pond and stone channel collecting water from a stream.' At the same time they also recorded a 'dry-stone constructed rectangular sheepfold, 6m by 5m.' Paul R. Davis, visiting the site in 2018, described it thus: 'A series of drystone pens forming an elongated rectangular structure, located near the head of Cwm Cilio. The adjacent stream has been dammed to form a sheep dip.'
