Penywaun is a suburb on the north-western outskirts of Aberdare. It has several amenities including a primary school (NPRN 415565) and Welsh medium comprehensive school (NPRN 418182); a post office; two general stores; a newsagents; 'The Colliers Arms' public house and two playgrounds. At one time there were also many places of worship including St. Winifred's church (NPRN 13464); Bethesda (NPRN 13463); Bethel Pentecostal (NPRN 14365); Cwm Mission Hall (NPRN 8881) and Cana Independent Chapel (NPRN 8879).
