DescriptionPenally 4 is a cross-carved stone, built horizontally into the external east wall of the north transept of St Nicholas and St Teilo's Church, Penally (NPRN 400386). The stone was first noted in 1982. The stone is one of four early medieval carved stones (see NPRNs 276028, 423463, 423464) at the church.
The stone is a rough pillar or slab of sandstone, which tapers sharply from top to bottom. Dimensions are given as 140cm height x 15 > 46cm width. The stone is carved on one face with a crudely-incised incomplete linear cross. The monument probably functioned as a grave marker and is thought to date to the 7th- to 9th-century.
