Description
The village of Sarn Mellteyrn is situated about nine miles south west of Pwllheli, on the Llyn Peninsula. There are three public houses in the village - Tafarn Penybont, Ty Newydd and Gwesty Penrhyn Arms, as well as a Post Office, a garage and a pottery shop. Sarn Mellteyrn has two chapels, both Grade II listed. Salem, situated on the southern edge of the village, was once a Calvinistic Methodist chapel but is now used by the Presbyterian community (NPRN 7065). The other chapel - Capel Ty Mawr - was also a Calvinistic Methodist chapel, located about half a mile south west of the village (NPRN 6764). The village church was dedicated to St Peter and Vincular, and was located on the northern edge of Sarn Mellteyrn. It was mostly demolished in the 1990s (NPRN 14).
At the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth, it appears that Sarn Mellteyrn was a thriving village. The 1st edition of the 25inch OS maps, published in 1889, show numerous quarries surrounding the village. There were also three mills nearby (NPRN 411339; 411340 and 411401). Tafarn Penybont, Ty Newydd and Gwesty Penrhyn Arms were all marked on the map, as well as The Wellington Inn and a police station. A National school had appeared by the time the second edition of the 25inch map was published in 1900, although it had been converted into a private dwelling by 1989 (NPRN 406766).
