Description
The hamlet of Gwbert is situated about two and a half miles north west of Cardigan. On the 1st edition of the 6inch OS map, published in 1891, there is no settlement in the area - only a farm called Towyn and a public house called Gwbert (NPRN 416268). There was also a life saving apparatus house (NPRN 305280) located just south of the public house. When the second edition was published in 1907, Evelyn Terrace had been built (NPRN 305280), but there had not been much more development by the time the fourth edition was published in 1953.
Most of the houses in the hamlet were built in the twentieth and the twenty-first century, but there is evidence of far earlier habitation. Craig y Gwbert (NPRN 403294) is located just north of the hamlet. It 'comprises the remains of a strongly defended promontory fort, probably dating to the the Iron Age and occupying a promontory of land on the east side of the mouth of the River Teifi.'
Today, confusingly, what was once called the Gwbert Hotel is now known as the Cliff Hotel, whilst a smaller hotel on Evelyn Terrace is now known as the Gwbert Hotel. The hamlet also has a golf course.
