DescriptionLlywernog is a hamlet situated nine miles east of Aberystwyth on the A44, and is named after the river that runs through it. It developed primarily in the nineteenth century in conjunction with Powell's Llywernog lead and zinc mines (NPRN 33888), which operated from 1809 to 1890. The hamlet had a public house called the Rhydlydan (NPRN 35199), which appeared on the 1st, 2nd and 4th editions of the 6inch OS maps, published in 1891, 1906 and 1953 respectively. There was also a Calvinistic Methodist Sunday School (NPRN 7212) which had been converted into a dwelling by 1998. Today the hamlet is best known for its museum - the Silver Mountain Experience (NPRN 301517), which in 1973 was 'privately developed by Peter Lloyd Harvey and his father, the late Dr Stephen Harvey of the University of Leicester.' Llywernog is also home to Bwlch Nant yr Arian woodland, where visitors can watch the red kites being fed daily. There is also a visitors centre and cafe. At the eastern end of the hamlet there is a cafe called the Red Kite Cafe.
