Description
Olmarch is a small hamlet located five miles south west of Tregaron and five and a half miles north east of Lampeter. Interestingly, on the first edition of the 6inch OS maps, published in 1891, the three farms nearest to Olmarch were called 'Olmarch Uchaf' (Upper Olmarch); 'Olmarch-ganol' (Middle Olmarch) and 'Olmarch Fawr' (Greater Olmarch). When the second edition was published in 1906, Olmarch-Ganol had changed its name to 'Bryn Dulas' (Dulas Hill). On modern maps, Olmarch-Uchaf has also changed its name, to 'Browerdd' (Green Vale). The hamlet itself seems to have expanded very slightly in the twentieth century, when around six bungalows were built and known collectively as 'Godre'r Coed' (Edge of the Wooded Hill). An Independent Sunday School was built at Olmarch in around 1900, but it had fallen derelict by 1998. There was also a halt (NPRN 41352) at the hamlet on the former Manchester & Milford Railway (NPRN 91660) between Pencader Junction and Aberystwyth. The halt was opened in 1929 but closed in 1965.
