Description
Waunfawr is situated a mile and a half east of Aberystwyth. At one time it was a separate village or hamlet, but from the mid-twentieth century as Aberystwyth continued to expand, Waunfawr became a part of the larger town. The first edition of the 6inch OS maps, published in 1891, shows a very small settlement, with a Calvinistic Methodist Sunday School (NPRN 7233) which was demolished in 1996. Employment would have been provided not only by the town of Aberystwyth, but also A quarry on the eastern edge of the settlement (NPRN 402559). The fourth edition of the 6inch OS maps was published between 1938 and 1953 and shows little change, except a small expansion of houses. There was a rapid expansion in the size of Waunfawr between the mid twentieth century and the 2017 OS map. There are several new houses on streets Maes Hendre, Rhos Hendre and Maesceinion. There is also a supermarket, a fish and chips shop and a post office. There is also a large comprehensive school in Waunfawr - Ysgol Penglais (NPRN 406437) - which educates approximately 1,300 pupils aged eleven to eighteen.
