Description
Foelgastell is a small village situated approximately nine miles south east of Carmarthen. The name means Bare Hill of the Castle in English. Dyfed Archaeological Trust note that 'several parcels of land around Foel Gastell inlcude the Castell name on the parish tithe map of 1847, and the prominent hill now known as Penyfoel, which overlooks the modern village from the west, was known as Foel Gastell in 1847. No evidence for a 'castell' or any form of defensive earthwork has been identified there.'
Most of the houses in Foelygastell appear to have been built in the twentieth and twenty-first century. The village has a playground and a public houes called The Smiths Arms.
