Description
Garn Lwyd farm is situated on the western banks of the river Gwendraeth Fach, approximately a mile and a half west of Maesybont. According to heritage consultancy Trysor, 'the farm is shown as "Garnllwyd Fawr" on the Ordnance Survey's Original Surveyors Drawings of 1813, which was the first detailed map made of the country. "Garnllwyd Fach" was located some 400m to the south-southwest. It appears on the 1 inch to 1 mile scale Ordnance Survey map of 1834 as Garn-llwyd.'
'The Llanddarog parish tithe map of 1846 was the first map to depict the field system and layout of buildings at Garn Lwyd. The field parcels around the farmyard area are shown to form a similar pattern to that seen today. The accompanying tithe schedule, which was drawn up in 1839, records that the property was owned and occupied by one George Williams.'
'The next detailed map of Garn Lwyd is the Ordnance Survey's 1:2500 scale map published in 1887. This is the first map to give an accurate depiction of the layout of the farm buildings. It shows that a building stood at the location of the present farmhouse, although it was smaller than the present house. Another building stood just to the northeast of the house, where a farm building stands today. A third building stood on the opposite side of the farmyard to the north of the house, where a building stands on a similar alignment today. Later Ordnance Survey maps, down to the mid-20th century, show a similar layout. During the second half of the 20th century a series of larger agricultural buildings were added to the northern side of the farmyard complex and these remain in place today.'
