Description
Royal Commission aerial reconnaissance on 19th July 2018, during the 2018 drought, recorded cropmarks of a rectangular enclosure and associated linear ditches on the valley floor at Gatlas, north of Caerleon. The fragmentary cropmarks of the rectangular enclosure, partly obscured by a country lane and a nearby house, comprise at least one side of a bivallate enclosure measuring approx. 70m long, with a broad inner ditch and more narrow outer ditch, aligned NW-SE. The enclosure is similar to those associated with Roman villas. In the adjacent field to the north-west are two curving, intersecting linear ditches which may be archaeological in origin.
