Description
A row of stone-built and vaulted 'cells' on the road to Broncwrt from Rhandirmwyn near the site of Penygarreg. These appear somewhat enigmatic structures but are undoubtedly potato clamps/root stores. Potato clamps became popular throughout upland Wales in the C19th and were presumably recommended by the agriculturalists of the day. The form and siting of these stone-built 'cells' set into a bank are characteristic of clamps and root stores. Usually, however, clamps occur as single structures; the row at Penygarreg is highly unusual. Information from James Newman & Tanya Holman. Richard Suggett/RCAHMW/August 2019.
