Description
The remains of a flat-bottomed timber vessel, believed to be a barge or trow, was partially exposed on the beach after storms in November 1996. The wreck lies orientated approximately east-west and what was visible measured some 15m length x 7.5 breadth. The visible length may represent half or less of the true length overall. The hull was carvel-built (edge to edge fastened planking) with two skins of planking. The inner planking was oak, tangentially sawn and measuring 250mm wide and 80mm thick. The outer planking, possibly from a substanital repair/rebuild, was made from a softwood. Both was fastened with treenails 30mm in diameter.The framing/floors were of oak and was also fastened with wooden treenails. The moulded dimensions of the floors was 200-300mm and the sided dimensions was 250-350mm. The ends of the floors displayed through-splayed scarphs to take the futtocks.
