Description
Archaeological remains associated with the loss of this vessel are not confirmed as present at this location, but may be in the vicinity.

Event and Historical Information:
The VIGILANT was a wooden smack built at Bristol in 1827. Technical and configuration specifications are given as 28tons burthen; 38,2ft length x 13.6ft breadth x 7ft depth; 1 deck, 1 mast, smack rigged with running bowsprit, squar sterned, carvel built. The VIGILANT was placed on the Bristol Shipping Register on 12 January 1844 (1 in 1844). At which time, the owner was George Thayer of Pill, pilot. This suggests that the smack may have been used as a Bristol Channel pilot cutter. The VIGILANT's registry was closed on 13 March 1860, after it was reported that the vessel had been lost in Aberthaw Reach.
