Event and Historical Information:
The GLEANER was a wooden paddle steamer (tug?) built at Low Walker, Northumberland, in 1858. The ship's registry was transferred from Newcastle to Cardiff on 19 August 1862 (14 in 1862). At which time, the vessel's technical and configuration specifications are given as 9.48gt; 71ft length x 14ft breadth x 7ft depth; 1 deck, 1 mast rigged as a sloop, clench built, framework wood. Length of engine room 27ft 6in, 1 engine producing 20hp. The vessel had multiple owners including John Brown of Felling Shoy in the county of Durham, master mariner; George Burdett of Cardiff, greengrocer; Peter Gibb of Cardiff, master mariner and John Harris of Cardiff, master mariner. Subsequent share holders include George Smart of Cardiff, merchant; Jonas Harris of Cardiff, coal merchant; Henry Gray of Cardiff, grocer; and other master mariners such as William Evans. The ship's regsitry was closed after it was reported that the vessel had been sunk by collision in the Cardiff Drain on 14 November 1887 and that it had become a total loss.
