Description
In the car park for Ynyslas Visitor Centre mounted on a small concrete plinth is a World War II moored contact mine. These were held in place just below the surface of the water by a steel cable attached to an anchor. The contact mines had several lead spikes or Hertz Horns that were crushed when a vessel made contact with them, causing an instance electro-chemical reaction that set off the mine. It is possible that this example washed ashore from local offshore minefields.

Maritime Officer, RCAHMW, January 2010.
