Event and Historical Information:
The CRISTIAN was a wooden sailing barque which was carrying rum and sugar from Demerara to Liverpool under the command of master William Stirling. The barque had been abandoned at sea but came ashore at Porth Gwylan on 4 January 1848. Local people succeeded in getting all her sails up the cliffs and about 5 hogshead of rum were brought to shore. Customs Officers and the Lloyds agent attended the wreck site and the hogsheads were placed in store to await onward shipping to Liverpool. On 22 January, the Caernarfon and Denbighshire Herald reported that someone had bored through the floor of the customs house and emptied one of the hogsheads (50 gallons).
