Description
Banks of relict upland fields on the steep ground N of Tyntyle farm. The field banks possibly became disused either when the enclosed ground was extended higher up on the mountain or, as in the case of banks immediately N of Tyntyle Farm, the steepest ground was given up. The field banks are partly aligned with later field walls (nprn 507767) of Tyntyle Farm. The banks are generally 2-3m wide and 0.5-0.7m high. Approximately 750m NW-SE across the contour, with 2 parallel banks returning downhill at the SE end for 250m. Sections of bank with a ditch on the uphill side probably mark the limit of enclosed ground before it was extended by the later walls. It has been argued that these banks are associated with a small settlement of platforms (nprn 507796), and are therefore medieval.
