Event and Historical Information:
This Boston was assigned to 418 Sqn based at Bredwell Bay, Essex. The airciraft had taken off at 11:15 on 17 October 1942 on a cross country training flight. After an hour of flying, they ran into mist. Taking radio bearings, they set their cruising height at 3,000ft which should have taken them clear of Snowdon until their turning point off Prestatyn. However, the aircraft flew into the summit of Carnedd Dafydd. The only survivor of the three onboard was Sgt Mervyn Sim, Royal Canadian Air Force. Realising that his legs were broken, he gathered parts of the airplane's fuselage around him to provide shelter. Two days later, he was located by a young airman and his girlfriend who were walking in the mountains. The young airman went for help and flagged down Dr Mostyn Williams from Bethesda. Three hours later, they arrived back at the crash site, followed shortly after by the rescue team who carried Sims down.
