Description
This record comprises a documentary reference to a shipping casualty which has been assigned to the maritime named location BRISTOL CHANNEL pending more information which may allow a more precise location for the loss to be assigned.

Event and Historical Information:
The CORSAIR was an iron-hulled steamship built at Glasgow in 1857. It was placed on the port of Bristol Shipping Register on 20 January 1864 (2 in 1864) at which time, technical and configuration specifications are given as 263gt, 179rt; 150.1ft length x 21.5ft breadth x 12ft depth; 1 deck, 2 masts, schooner rigging, stern square, built clincher, man's figurehead, framework iron; official number 17196. At time of loss, the vessel was owned by John Edwards of Bristol, merchant (21 shares), William Turner of Bristol, merchant (33 shares) and William Henry Edwards of Bristol , merchant, (10 shares). Its register entry was closed with the annotation 'Foundered in the Bristol Channel 20 March 1876'.
