Description

The wreck of the SNOWDON RANGE lies in 110m of water and is orientated 260 (bow)/080 (stern). The wreck is 121m long, at least 14m wide, and appears to be broken amidships (McCartney, 2022: 198).

The wreck was originally identified by the UKHO as the AGBERI (NPRN 274777). Research by Dr Innes McCartney (2022: 198) for the Echoes from the Deep project, following a detailed survey by Bangor University, identified the wreck as being dimensionally, positionally, and archivally consistent with the loss of the NAME. The record has been updated to reflect that research.

Event and Historical Information:
The SNOWDON RANGE (ex. SS DEN OF KELLY (1915), ex. DALHANNA (1906-1915)) was a screw steamship built in 1906 by Scott Shipbuilding and Engineering Co., Greenock (Yard No. 403, Official No. 124138). The vessel was 4662 grt, 118.9m long, 15.9m wide, and 8m depth. It was constructed from steel and powered by a 3-cylinder triple expansion engine with a single shaft, single screw. At the time of loss, the ship was owned by the Neptune Steam Navigation Co. Ltd (Furness Withy and Co. Ltd.), of London, and registered at Liverpool.

On 28 March 1917, the SNOWDON RANGE was en route from Philadelphia to Liverpool with general cargo, and explosives, when it was torpedoed by UC-65. The torpedo struck the engine room, port side, and the ship was abandoned. The crew of UC-65 then boarded the SNOWDON RANGE and placed explosives to sink the ship. The crew of the SNOWDON RANGE was later picked up by the SS SOMERSET COAST (NPRN 271587) and landed at Holyhead. Four of the crew were lost in the sinking of the SNOWDON RANGE.
