Description
The annotation 'ferry' is shown on historic chart. The early ferry's history involved operation by monks and local fishermen. During the reign of George III (1760 - 1820), the ferry was transferred to the ownership of the Barmouth Harbour Trust who let the rights. The ferry carried goods and livestock, and also mail. The advent of the Cambrian Railway initially brought more traffic to the ferry, but the opening of Barmouth railway bridge on 10th October 1867 ended the need for its continuance. The Fairbourne Light Railway still connects by pedestrian ferryboat to Barmouth.
