Description
The old lifeboat station built in 1886 is annotated on an historic shart and shown on OS 1st edition 25in mapping. The lifeboat slipway, running parallel to the road, is also shown on the OS mapping. The history of lifeboat dates back to 1837 when the first lifeboat was bought with the help of the RNLI. It was managed by the harbour trust. The lifeboat was taken over fully by the RNLI in 1853 and a new boathouse was built. Another lifeboat house was built in 1886 and the slipway improved in 1903. This station closed in 1931, but was re-opened in 1863. The present day lifeboat house (NGR SN61379584) was completed in 1994-5 to house an Atlantic 21 and launching tractor, along with a souvenir sales outlet, and crew facilities. The present lifeboat in a B class Atlantic 75 lifeboat.
