Description
The first lifeboat station was built in 1864 to house a 12-oared pulling and sailing lifeboat. A small building on the breakwater housed lifesaving rocket aparatus (see NPRN 518525). Modern aerial photographs reveals that the house is still extant, although a new lifeboat house was built in 1993 and houses a Mersey class ALB `Frank and Lena Clifford of Stourbridge?and D class inshore lifeboat (ILB) `Amy Lea?. The annotation 'Watchhouse' on historic charts appears to suggest that Coastguard may have had a presence before the lifeboat service was implemented.
