Description
A square lime kiln is shown is association with two mooring posts to the west (NPRN 525086). Modern aerial photography suggests a small quay and confirms that the D-shaped kiln is still largely extant although now grassed over. A field visit confirms this as a fine example of a limekiln typically sited at the edge of sloping ground adjacent to the harbour of Abercastle. It has two opposed drawing arches. Circular in plan approximately 8m in diameter. The charging pit is 4.5m in diameter and though partially filled with rubble still 2.5m deep. Overall from its lowest point the kiln is 6.5m high. Built of mortared stone. 5m above O.D.
