Two sets of stepping stones, at this location and another 175m upriver, are shown on OS 1st edition mapping suggesitng the locations of earlier ford. The fords have been replaced by bridges dating from the late 18th century (NPRNS 24184 and 24162). Modern aerial photography shows mostly heavy treecover, but the tradition of fording at this point is continued by a farm track.
