Description
Cae Abaty is a C19 slate quarry (nprn 310051), marked on the 1830 Ordnance Survey, but apparenmtly abandoned by the time of the 1890 OS map. The inclined plane (nprn 527521) was used to convey materials down to the lower level of the site and the base of the incline tramway (nprn 527511) that hauled the slate over the summit of Waun Fach towards Dinas Mawddwy. The winding house faces S and measures 5m N-S x 4m. The stone-built E and W walls stand up to 2.9m high but are partly reduced. The span between the walls is 2.3m, housing the drum, parts of which are still extant. This includes a collapsed axle tree with 3 x clasp-arm frames, suggesting the drum had a diameter of 1.9m, along with plummer blocks, iron bolts and bands.
