Description
Cae Abaty is a C19 slate quarry (nprn 310051), marked on the 1830 Ordnance Survey, but apparenmtly abandoned by the time of the 1890 OS map. In the final phase of working the tunnel (nprn 527513) that had conveyed materials from the quarry (nprn 527519) was abandoned and, instead, slate was hauled from a greater depth by a crane. The crane base, the crane probably used for hoisting slate from the adjacent deep quarry (NPRN527519). The base consists of 2 cast iron frames, 1.3m high and 1m apart, fixed to a cast iron base which is half-buried by turf. A 3rd component fitted into a square recess in the base, and carried the timber derrick.
