Description
A sub-square enclosure containing a sheepfold. The eastern edge of the enclosure is formed by a rocky, west-facing outcrop. The enclosure is approximately 30m by 30m in extent and has an entrance on the northern side. The sheepfold comprises two small pens arranged in an L-shape, both adjoining the western wall of the enclosure. It appears to be of post-medieval date with more modern repairs. The southern pen is approximately 14m by 5m in extent, aligned north-south, and has an entrance in its eastern wall. The northern pen is aligned east-west, and is approximately 12m in length and 6m in width. Its northern wall extends eastwards for 3m beyond the end of the cell. It has an entrance in the northern wall leading into the enclosure and another in the western wall leading out of the enclosure. The walls were 0.5m in width and approximately 1.3m in height except fo the northern wall of the northern pen, which was 2m in height. The building stone was possibly not local as it was much redder than the rock of the nearby outcrop or the older wall sections. It is depicted on the 1901 OS map. A. Farrington-McCabe, ArcHeritage, 2 July 2012.
