Description
An extensive area of C19 opencast mining, or patching, approximately 600m NW-SE by up to 300m, located to the N of Fochriw. The 1884 OS map suggests that it extended further W, and was crossed by the Brecon & Merthyr Railway (NPRN85501) but this section has been reclaimed. The ground is undulating and contains distinct quarried faces, e.g. at the NGR given, where the face is up to 4m high and 16m long (N-S), returning to the W for 8m. There are similar faces 3m high at SO1032305826 and SO1034405945. Large areas of spoil cover the area (NPRN402086), some of which may be later.
